Preparatory Programme Master of Financial Economics

The package

  • The recommended route for entering MFE is after successfully finishing the Financial Economics (FE) major in the Master of Business Economics (MBE) or Master of Economics (ME) Programme. The FE core of this programme consists of four courses, and there are a number of electives in finance and quantitative methods. More information can be found here.

  • Students that took another Master Programme can, however, still enter MFE, by successfully finishing (or, if necessary, adding) a preparatory package consisting of three of the four core courses, namely

    • D0R05A Strategic Financial Management,   Auke Jongbloed, Linda Van de Gucht

    • D0C15A Macro Finance, Hans Dewachter

    • D0C37A Time Series Analysis, Christophe Croux

Relative to the MBE/FE route, this alternative would contain, in total, fewer Finance & Quant courses (about five).

How/when to take the preparatory exams?

1.  Prior to MFE     Ideally, the three preparatory courses are taken before the MFE year—for instance, as electives or core courses during the student’s first-master studies, or under a separate credit contract on top of the regular load.

2.  During MFE  At the other extreme, students can enroll for the three courses of the Preparatory Programme on top of the regular 60-pt MFE curriculum, and take the exams along with the others.

Of course you can also mix these—for instance, take one or two of the three courses prior to MFE, and the balance during the MFE year. If you want to obtain credit for a different but equivalent course, the similarity with our offer should be stunning indeed; for instance, not any Econometrics II or Corporate Finance II course will do, and for Macro Finance the chances of finding a similar course elsewhere are infinitesimal.
